Where concentration begins.

The Primary classroom, sometimes called the Children's House, is where a four-year-old learns to pour, to sort, to trace a letter, and to finish what she started.

Primary

The room

Children enter with VPK at four and stay through kindergarten, two years in one room with one guide. The youngest watch the oldest; the oldest teach the youngest. By the end of kindergarten a child reads, writes, and works with numbers into the thousands using the golden beads.

Practical life

Pouring, sweeping, buttoning, preparing snack. Real work with real tools, sized for small hands. This is where concentration and independence are built.

Sensorial

The pink tower, the brown stair, the color tablets, the sound cylinders. Materials that isolate one quality at a time so the child can classify the world.

Language

Sandpaper letters teach the sound and the shape together. The movable alphabet lets a child write before she can hold a pencil well. Reading follows.

Mathematics

Number rods, spindle boxes, the golden beads. A four-year-old holds a thousand in her hands before she ever sees the numeral.

Culture

Puzzle maps, land and water forms, the parts of a plant, the life cycle of a frog. Spanish is woven through the day.

Grace and courtesy

How to greet a visitor, how to wait, how to offer help. Yoga and creative movement are part of the week.
